Is this...gaming? (DISASTER INSIDE) | GDU Gamejam 8 Devlog #2


I was keeping notes here throughout my day, with the intent to turn it into a coherent devlog post... but then things went wrong. Enjoy my notes in chronological order of disaster. 

Things I added today:

  • there's a big red obnoxious timer now!
  • the player dies when the timer ends (super janky in the blueprints, but it works)
  • I added an end-level screen and a trigger point at the top of the tower
  • OH SHOOT BIG BUG based on the way I set those up that would prevent me from ever building additional levels in the future whoops
  • start deleting blueprint parts and adding them back until the glitch stops happening
  • Looks like the big bug was because I was trying to do a bunch of stuff related to my player character getting destroyed BUT they get destroyed when a level changes or reloads, and for some reason I'm not understanding even having the destroy event in my Blueprint made the level reload completely glitch out? 

AND THEN - DEAR READER - I GOT HOME AND NONE OF THOSE THINGS HAD SAVED. 

Well, I said I like speedrunning. Time to speedrun all of these updates so I'm not super far behind? It's 9pm, which is way too late to be doing this whoops...

Okay here we go! 

  • big red obnoxious timer is back
  • player "dies" when timer ends (the level just resets, still janky)
  • No bug this time! 
  • and then I was almost back to where I was and Unreal CRASHED??? UGH, I don't know when the last time it saved was

OKAY EVERY TIME I TRY TO DELETE SOMETHING FROM MY LEVEL UNREAL JUST CRASHES? I PUT AN AUDIO SOURCE IN AND ITS SO BAD AND I WANT TO DELETE IT BUT UNREAL WONT LET ME

I was going to rebuild my testing teleporter but nope. It's bed time. I'm not even formatting this post.
